It was in the blazing heat of August 2019 that I went to Iran for the first (and only) time. This was the year when my citizenship was officially validated and recognized by the Islamic Republic "in" Iran, allowing me to enter the country after 25 years of bureaucratic deadlocks.
Being in Iran allowed me to get closer to my father's origins and to have access to stories and perspectives, until then remote and blurred, about the country, the culture, the day-to-day life and the family, enabling a personal and emotional (re)connection to a territory that only existed in an idyllic form, fed by old, distant family stories and memories.
Behind the Veil is an exhibition that, through visual, performing and gastronomic arts, crosses these plural experiences in dialog with the present time.
An autobiographical exhibition that crosses my multiple identities - woman-Portuguese-Iranian-artist-performer-cook - seeks to reflect, discuss and unravel concerns felt in the past and present in both societies (Portuguese and Iranian / West and East), highlighting tensions about the Iranian Diaspora, stereotypes and imaginaries regarding the place of women in an Islamic culture.
